Thread: Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition):: General:: Buying Guide? Advisable to purchase expansions with Core?

Just curious,

My girlfriend is loving Mice and Mystics, and though Descent lacks the narrative depth, and isn't cooperative with only two players, she has expressed interest in trying Descent.

However, is it advisable to only purchase the core and play through that in full before getting an expansion, or can they be used together in some fashion without feeling like we are ruining the expansion content before we get to it?

To clarify that last line, Mice and Mystics has an expansion but it takes place after the core game's campaign, so one can't really mix between the adventures. Worse yet, the added elements synergize with the story in the expansion to such a degree that, though addable to the core, would then make the expansion content less content rich when we eventually get to it. It doesn't really add anything to expand the original adventure.

So, in essence, do the expansions to Descent intentionally expand/enhance the experience of the core game (like expansion to Arkham Horror, etc), or are they intended to be entirely new, self contained experiences, like Mice and Mystics' approach?
