Good morning (or whenever you read this),

I'm considering getting into Descent. Until recently I played boardgames often and RPGs on occassion. Lately my schedule has shifted and I have less time and less frequency with which to get into those things. I'm considering picking up Descent to attempt to scratch those itches via a monthly, longer session of gaming. I've got absolutely no experience with the game and have a few questions.

NN What is a good playtime for a session? How much variability exists in that?
SS What if I don't have consistent players from one session to another, can folks swap in and out or do they really need to climb from level 1 to understand their character, like some roleplaying games?
WE How integrated is the narrative between missions/sessions/whatever they call their chunks of story?
WE If I'm the Overlord, what kinds of issues will I likely run into in trying to run the game, especially as a new player myself?
B Are there any add ons I should probably get right out of the gate?
A How's the solo play? I played Pathfinder: the Adventure Card Game solo and while it was a good way to learn the rules and kill time, it wasn't fun. Can anyone point me to what I need to buy/do to play solo?

Please feel free to point me to videos or articles where you feel like the game has been very thoroughly explained. I'll be watching several videos on the topic shortly but thought I'd lob these questions out here and see what people had to say.

Thanks for feedback

PS for the record, I'm not interested in Imperial Assault which I understand to be mechanically very similar.
