I never played 1e and only bought 2e last week. I hadn't read anything on the forum before buying and playing it.My first impression that it wasn't at all what I wanted. I was looking for something with the feel and flavour of an RPG in a board game.
But this felt like a tactical race game. I got the real impression the theme and the mechanics were a terrible fit.
When I came and checked on here it seems I'm not the only one. A decent RPG style boardgame maybe is impossible. I much preferred Pathfinder for that.
I checked out the descriptions for Imperial Assault and it immediately made sense. The theme of a team of rebels against the waves of the Empire is a great thematic fit for the way Descent actually feels and plays and I can see straight away how it would be a massive improvement.
Oh well. I may try some of the co-op style variants as they seem to be much closer to what I was actually hoping for
