This is just to give you some ideas, but this is how I'm storing my two editions together. Let me throw in a few caveats:1. This isn't 100% done, but darn close.
2. This doesn't include the Rtl and SoB chits and tile pieces, but I think it would work if I needed it to.
3. This won't be practical for everyone but works great for me.
Since I don't know how to post pics in this post, I'll link them here:

As you can see, I have three main pieces of storage:
1. The rubbermaid tub for my tiles, chit boxes, rules, guides, and player mats.
2. The box for my cards and hero sheets. All cards are sleeved and all hero sheets are laminated.
3. The Battlehive II for all miniatures.
I posted pictures with everything opened so you can see how I'm doing it. I use plastic separators in the card box and those can be labeled so you know what cards go with what expansions or editions. These are very easy to track and remove. A nice, simple storage for the hundreds of Descent cards.
The tub is pretty simple, too. The quest guides and rules go on bottom, covered by the player mats. On top of those go the chit boxes. I also put the smaller tiles in the chit boxes as well as dice and doors. These come in two boxes. I prefer to have one plano box for all the overlord stuff and one for everything else. Each expansion tile set gets its own bag and those go around the outside and I lay on top of the plano boxes the tile set for ToI because the large tile piece is too tall to stand up, however, it all fits with the lid sealed very easily.
The Battlehive has enough foam space to store all the descent stuff from edition 1 and 2. However, I haven't put the 2nd Ed miniatures in there yet. However, just eyeballing it, I'm sure I'll be safe. If too many more expansion come out ... I'll be tinkering with this again.
I'm happy to answer questions on any of these, but this has worked very well for me.
