I saw this little snippet in the CRRG and was confused. The rule book never explicitly stated either way, but it does say that the attacker rolls his attack pool and counts hearts **new paragraph and line break** The target gathers his defense dice, rolls then, and counts the shields.I have always played this way:
1. Declare target
Possible triggers:
> "When targeting" ie. Knight's Defend ability
> Before rolling Attack Dice
> When performing an attack ie Rune Master's Rune Master ability
2. Roll Attack Dice
Possible triggers:
> After roll Attack Dice
> Before rolling Defense Dice
> When performing an attack
3. Roll Defense Dice
Possible triggers:
>After rolling Defense Dice
>After dice are rolled (or anything that encompasses all dice in an attack)
>When performing an attack
4. Surges
9 out of 10 times it's not a big deal as most defensive capability come after defense die are rolled, but it really hinders Champion's Glory of Battle. You have a 16+% chance for your Courage Token to be spent on a miss, or you'll end up just blocking the whole attack without (even though that still could happen with how I've always played).
I just want to see where the proof is, if possible.
