Thread: Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition):: General:: A Hero/Monster/Class Randomizer

My wife and I decided to start playing Trials of Frostgate and the Delve.

In order to get a real challenge out of it, we'd wanted to put our skills to the test with hero and class combinations that we'd either never played or would never have picked. If it's going to be a trial, let's make it one!

Since they're one-off sessions, it's not too much of a commitment if you end up with conflicting class combos. What it does do, is put you in weird and interesting scenarios that you'd not normally come across. They tend to end earlier than with a hand-picked setup; but it's a blast working around the limitations of odd combinations.

I couldn't find a good randomizer that I liked online. They usually took several minutes to use (roll dice, use look-up chart, check if you had the hero in your collection, re-roll if not, do the same for classes/monsters). I'm way to lazy to spend 2 minutes on a simple problem. So, I spent a few hours on it instead...

I built a randomizer that would work on my phone (google doc shortcut). Open it up and it'll give you your random selection. Easy peasy. You can select/deselect what's in your personal collection, including the latest (hybrid) classes from Lost Legends. "Get 5, pick 1" hero/monster open group and "Get 3, pick 1" class selections are common for us in normal campaigns, so that's included in the randomizer as well.

We take "option 1" from the randomizer every time for the trials/delve though. You get the "oh crap" moment sometimes when seeing what you ended up with; but we've managed to work though the challenges pretty well. The XP bumps in those modes are often enough that you can adapt quickly for the most part. But like I said, this way of playing makes for shorter, but more interesting sessions.

Anyways, I guess the post has two purposes:
1) Hope the randomizer is useful to someone else out there.
2) I recommend trying out the 100% randomized hero/class selections to spice up the single-session game modes.
