Thread: Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition):: General:: My game group thinks this game is broken; I think the gamers are broken

I’ve wanted to play Descent 2 for some time, and finally one of our gamers in our group got a copy and we got it to the table. We had five players: four heroes and an Overlord. The first encounter, A Fat Goblin, the heroes lost miserably. Consensus ruled that even though a hero was standing on a crop bundle, the goblins could take the bundle. I was not part of that consensus. The Overlord cleaned the floor with us. We managed to get a couple of heroes onto a couple of the bundle of crops, but the goblins snatched the bundle out from under them without fighting the heroes. We managed to save only one bundle. We went on to the second Fat Goblin encounter, but since Splig had three bundles of crops, he was super powerful. Then the Overlord determined that he could move Splig one hex outside the torture chamber while he interrogated his victims. I objected that this didn’t play thematically, but was again overruled by the majority. Splig found Frederick and while a minion neutralized one of the heroes, Splig sprinted out of the prison, stepping over the neutralized hero, while the heroes only felt a dash of wind as he sped past. Full disclosure, I haven’t read the rules so wasn’t in any strong position to argue against, what I thought, were ridiculous rules decisions.

Well, I was disappointed with the game thus far but was looking forward to a few more plays before I made a final determination. But last night I heard the other members of the group decided the game was a bomb and they didn’t want to play it anymore. I now get to own the game.

So what did we get wrong??? This game is highly rated! Obviously a lot of gamers love this game! Are the first two encounters simply overpowered for the Overlord, or did our Overlord simply push for rules that unbalanced the game? I REALLY want to enjoy this game, but would like to know if it can provide a better experience than our group has had thus far.
