This game seems much more luck based than the D1 version. Please stop reading here if you don't want spoilers.

We just finished the Masquerade Ball scenario.

Due to how the tokens were placed in Encounter 1, we were only able to rescue one of the guests. Three of them were deep within the monster groups and were easy for the monsters to steal. For all accounts, we should have lost. However it came down to the roll of one die to determine win or lose for the heroes.

During Encounter 2, the lady vampire failed only one knowledge check while going through the doors. We ate through the monsters and tried to catch up, but the pure luck of the die rolls let the overlord win easily.

Are the other scenarios so luck based? Is the entire game built where the win or lose comes down to this kind of dice rolling? I understand the combat being based on dice, but for things that determine win or lose by the roll of a die is not appealing.
