First, I know about earlier posts where people discussed how the heroes should play to win. This post is't as much about strategy, as how to make it fun. Yesterday we continued our two hero campaign (I know this is the hardest setup), finishing the the third quest. The heroes have this far only won the First Blood quest, and gotten their butts kicked in the other. I believe that their hero combo isn't optimal with one really slow hero (guess who?). Added to this, I think that they have been unlucky with the dices, had to much focus on bashing and to little on the quest objectives. They also have not gotten anything useful to buy. You can imagine that there have been a lot of sour faces and constant commenting about how unbalanced this game is.

My question (as an overlord) is, how can we make it more fun. Obviously, you can think of the overlord as real opponent, or you can think of him (or her) as a gamemaster in a RPG. There is in my opinion a substantial difference. When I act as an opponent, I am more focused on winning the game. When acting as a gamemaster I'm more focused on making the players have a great time. What is your take on this? How are you other overlords dealing with this?

I understand that this is a complicated question. The answer i greatly affected by the heroes attitude towards this. I'm sure that if I asked them, they would want me to do my best to win the game. On the other hand, I can say that we didn't have a fun time yesterday. I also want you to be clear about the fact that I don't consider me to be a particularly good overlord (at best average). Just to avoid any discussion about this being a self righteous post. I'm just curious about your opinions...

Lastly, I feel that I have started to ramble. I just want to finish by telling you that we ended the session yesterday by restarting the campaign. This time letting my friends control two heroes each. Now they are all cheerful and optimistic. Hopefully this spirit will prevail throughout the campaign...
