Hi everyone - we are an average gaming family of 5; myself, my wife and three girls aged 9, 13 and 16. We've been euro style gaming since about 2006 and have a fair number to our name. Although a sci-fi roleplayer in the past (where I loved being the DM), I never got into D&D - was more caught up in WH40K. Anyhow, many moons later, I recently introduced my family to Lords of Waterdeep on a bit of a gamble (got it second hand in case it bombed out). they love it! My wife says it has knocked 7 Wonders off the top spot for her. It has even revitalised their interest in worker-placement games (Soon I'll have them hooked on Agricola!).

All good news - anyhow, along comes the Descent reboot. I've heard lots of good reviews and some bad reviews. A friend has it and some of my local gaming group have played his copy and they love the game. I watched the Tom Vasel review last night and it does look good. My youngest daughter asked what I was watching and I tried to explain the concept briefly - and tell me if this is wrong - but I said Well you know the quests we have to complete with the orange and black and purple cubes in Waterdeep? Nod. Well this game is those quests that you can actually go on and do the whole thing as one of the people. Cool she said, then she went off to bed.

Anyhow - what I was wanting to know - as someone who has had some prior RPG experience in the past, and with a family who have lots of gaming experience and a touch of AD&D knowledge (ie they know what a mage is and why you'd want to send a Cleric on a Piety quest) and my own love of creating stories for RPG games, is Descent the game for us? Or have I got the wrong idea of who the game is aimed at and what sort of game this is?

From the reviews I love the idea of levelling up and being able to find and cash in loot and carry on your character to another story which I think my youngest and middle daughters will find most appealing in that you get a sense of ownership over your character and really want them to survive (A reason why we love playing Last Night on Earth).

any thoughts or comments would be great cheers!

frank
