An old, winged Dragon Hybrid warrior with a fair attitude.Yet, why is Belthir following Baron Zachareth?
At first, he seems like the normal mercenary, changing sides to that which matches his pocket.
He is also a powerful warrior, who places merit in a good clean fight.
Yet, he is somehow bound to the Overlord (= Zachareth).
But what are his goals?
Does he want his "father" Gryvorn released?
Is he after riches?
Or does he simply consider Zachareth to be that powerful that deserves to be king and himself to serve under him?
In accordance with quests:
DEATH ON THE WING:
In this quest, Baron Zachareth claims that he would love to help, but a shortage in silver does not allow him to lend Baron Greigory the needed for Arhynn's soldiers. He sends out the heroes to investigate why there haven't been any shipments from the mines in Carthmounts.
Now, 2 things are possible:
1. Belthir is already in alliance with Zachareth.
Zachareth probably hoped to be sending the heroes to their deaths, as he had ordered Belthir to slay everyone in the mines and retrieve the shield. On the other hand, when Belthir meets the heroes, he is polite enough to make his case clear warning them on Encounter 1.
2. Belthir acts on his own and Zachareth truly doesn't know why the shipments are hindered.
As a "Scion of Gryvorn" he wishes to collect the proclaimed shield that is supposedly forged by a single scale from his sire's hide. Though, he mocks such belief.
Eitherway, heroes go after him in Encounter 2 and the side that wins gets the shield. Still, Belthir doesn't kill the heroes and hopes to meet them again in combat - a noble warrior.
THE WYRM TURNS:
Belthir comes to the heroes in friendly terms. He asks for their help to stop Zachareth from desecrating a Dragon's gravesite. Zachareth probably requires the Dragon's skull for his final ritual. During the trip he is pleasant and in Encounter 1 he helps the heroes past the gates.
In Encounter 2, he initially seems too grieved to enter the valley where his brother's bones lie. If OL won in Encounter 1, he claims that "He (=Zachareth?) is too strong" and attacks the heroes. This is a weird move; he went through all this to thwart Zachareth's plan and finally chickens out? Plus, as a 'noble' warrior he should be more
Anyways, what is more intriguing is what he says if the heroes lose. "I'll never be free of that cursed mortal!" Does he owe a debt to Zachareth? Does Zachareth have something valuable of his?
THE WYRM RISES:
This one is confusing.
Heroes go out with murderous intentions to kill Belthir. An illusionary arena awaits them and in Encounter 2 the champion proves to be Belthir indeed. He claims that his brothers (=Shadow Dragons?) have been trapped here and their only ticket to freedom is being victorious in the championship round.
A trick played by Zachareth to heroes and Belthir alike in order to kill each other in fight?
Some deity has trapped spirits of warriors whose only release would be an honorable victory?
Anyway, the whole thing is probably a hallucination judging by the text in heroes' victory condition.
So, considering the above and his race, I am mostly inclined to believe that Belthir is not really a bad guy; he has simply lost his family and wishes for Gryvorn to be released so that he may find a family there. He helps Zachareth towards this goal, but doesn't really want him to do what he wills.
What do you think?
