I am looking for a dungeon crawl for me and my son, but we are looking for something cooperative. One character each.

Is there any chance Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) could work without extensive rules changes, or is it too much of a stretch? I have seen the coop variants here, but would prefer to (more or less) stay with the mechanics as published. Given that the competitive aspect isn't terribly important, can the Overlord role be played to the best of our abilities, so to speak - similar to how one can play both sides in a traditional wargame, when playing it solitaire? Or do the mechanics make this difficult (e.g. hidden information/goals for the Overlord)?

We're basically looking for something that has a well-defined story, has a map, scenarios, not too cumbersome mechanics, medium-complexity rules in general, reasonable playing time. Nice components. Coop, with one character each is central, and some sort of campaign system (or at least having the possibility of chaining scenarios in some way) would be nice.

Other games have been tried, but haven't been that successfull:

- Mice and Mystics: Great sense of theme & story, but too cumbersome combat mechanics.
- Pathfinder Adventure Card Game: Rise of the Runelords - Base Set: Too abstract and 'samey'. Desperately needs a map, as well as some scenarios that actually feel different.

Legends of Andor has been our biggest success so far, but of course the scenario selection is extremely limited.

At the moment, my best bet for a new game is Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon Board Game or the other games in the series, but I am afraid it might be lacking in the story/scenario department, which is why I am considering Descent as well...
